As a ghostwriter, I write life stories for people who do not wish to or cannot seem to write their memoirs on their own. To do so, I assume my client’s voice by writing in first-person narrative. Rather than writing their stories, it is so much easier for most people to tell their stories. Nothing needs to be prepared by the storyteller. It is my task as the interviewer to get the story told.
Almost without exception, my clients begin with an apology: “This may not be all that interesting to you, Mary Jane.” I reassure them and begin to listen to their answers to my questions. Of the more than 100 memoirs I have written to date, I have never heard a life story that did not interest me. Everyone has a story to tell.
